South Bay People's Walk 5km Information:

Date: January 15, 2006

Time: 8:00am start

Location: Chula Vista Marina, see course map

A non-competitive event held in conjunction with the USATF 30km Racewalk National Championships, the People's Walk 5km will be on a course adjacent to the 30km race course. Participants will be encouraged to cheer on the Olympic hopefuls, learn about racewalking, and enjoy a healthy walk through the scenic Chula Vista Marina area.

Directions:

Directions from San Diego:

Take I-5 south to E St. exit, straight at stoplight onto Bay Blvd. south. Take a right on Lagoon Dr. at stop sign. Take a right on G St. at stop sign. Take first left onto Sandpiper Way and go to intersection with Marina Parkway. See map for parking options.


Directions from San Ysidro:

Take I-5 north to H St. exit. Go left on H St. to Bay Blvd. Take a right on Bay Blvd. Take a left on Lagoon Dr. at stop sign. Take a right on G St. at stop sign. Take first left onto Sandpiper Way and go to intersection with Marina Parkway. See map for parking options.

Road closure and detours:

The City of Chula Vista Police will close the northbound lane of Marina Parkway/J Street to through traffic from 7:30am until 12:30pm from the intersections of J Street/Bay Blvd and Marina Pkwy/Sandpiper Way. Traffic will be rerouted north along Bay Blvd to F St, west along F St to G St and south to Sandpiper Way. See detour map.

30km Race Information

Date: January 15, 2006

Time: 8:00am

Location: Chula Vista Marina. Start/finish area will be at the intersection of Marina Parkway and Sandpiper Way. The 2km loop course is fully enclosed on the northbound lane of Marina Parkway/J Street.

Awards: 30km Men's and Women's Senior Division, medals to top six. 30km Masters, medals to top three in each five-year age division. Open 10km and 20km, no awards. The 30km race is the first stop on the USATF Racewalking Grand Prix 2006 with points given to the top ten finishers in each National Championship event.

Course Description (see map):

The 30km competitors will start at the intersection of Marina Parkway and Sandpiper Way, head south around the bend where Marina Parkway becomes J Street, and walk east to the intersection of J Street and Bay Boulevard. They will then loop around a half-circle of cones, return along the same route, and repeat the loop fifteen times.

Race history:

The City of Chula Vista has hosted the USATF 30km Racewalk Championship twice before, in 2004 and 2005. The course has also been used for the 2002 USATF 50km Racewalk Nationals and the 2004 US Olympic Team Trials 50km Racewalk. Olympians, Olympic hopefuls, and national-class competitors of all ages and from all over the United States will come to Chula Vista to compete in the race. In 2006, for the first time, there will be a non-competitive People’s Walk 5km held in conjunction with the championship race. The South Bay community is invited to cheer on the Olympic hopefuls and enjoy a healthy walk in Chula Vista's scenic marina parks.
